2022.01.24 00:54 Squrlz4Ever "Fuzz" by Mary Roach (W.W. Norton, 2021)
\"Fuzz\" was the fourth book by Mary Roach I've read.
MARY'S ROACH'S FORTE is bringing the highly intelligent and witty mind of a non-scientist to scientific topics and writing about them engagingly. Her books typically have witty one-word titles. (Before Fuzz, we had Stiff, Gulp, Spook, and Bonk.) As the subtitle indicates, Fuzz's subject is the conflict between Nature and Man, particularly where humans or their property damages or destroyed. This topic covers the gamut from bears breaking into cabin retreats, to raging elephants destroying crops, to leopards carrying away and eating children, to trees killing hikers who are unlucky enough to be underneath them when they come crashing to earth.
One of the reasons Ms. Roach's books are so good is that she really throws herself into her work. Before setting pen to paper, she always begins by doing two things. First, she researches the topic extensively. Second, she goes on-site to witness her subject firsthand. Accordingly, for Fuzz, Roach read exhaustively about human–animal conflicts, even going back to the 17th century, and then traveled all over the planet. The surprising facts and exotic locales and often make for great reading.
Here's an example. In her chapter on man-eating leopards in Garhwal, a town in the foothills of the Himalayas, Roach recounts a theory linking the leopard attacks to, of all things, the flu pandemic of 1918:
So many people died so quickly ... that the Hindu funerary custom of carrying bodies to the Ganges for cremation was for a time replaced with a more expedient rite. A burning coal was placed in the mouth and the corpse cast down the hillside in the general direction of the river. A leopard will readily scavenge a meal, and Corbett [an early investigator of the subject] surmised it was these bodies that gave the Garhwal carnivores their taste for human meat.I could give dozens more examples, but I'd hate to spoil future Roach readers the pleasure of encountering such passages themselves. Suffice it to say: If your eyes opened just a bit wider reading that last paragraph and you want more of same, Mary Roach should be on your reading list.
This was her fourth book I've read, and it certainly won't be my last.
Rating: 5 stars (out of 5)
Disclosure: Several years ago, I exchanged a couple emails with Mary Roach and that may hamper my objectivity as a reviewer somewhat. I complimented her on her books Gulp and Stiff, which I'd recently read, and her response was as gracious as could be. We also touched on the subject of e-readers and how they handle footnotes. (That's a particular interest of Roach's because she uses footnotes frequently. Her footnotes are always interesting, sometimes hilarious, and are not to be missed.)

2022.01.24 00:54 Drakabanedr Human Celestial Warlock Concept (5E)
I've decided to start uploading all of my character ideas that I've been building for several years now.
I'll start with my most fleshed out, a human (variant) hermit that was spawned from the Book of Shadows idea seen below.
Benevolence Watcher, adamantly introducing himself as simply "Ben", is a human caretaker of a long standing shrine to the God of the Sun in a high mountain pass. His family has been taking care of the shrine for many generations, though in the last hundred years the pilgrimage that used to go through the pass has since shifted to a much more accessible low-land pass made possible by the bridging of a river near a waterfall at the foot of the mountain. Ben's father passed when he was young, and it's been 5 years since his mother passed.
One day while gathering supplies he came across a beautiful young woman laying by the side of the road, unconscious with a severely infected looking wound. Taking her back to his cottage he treated her injuries and could do little more than keep her stable as the poison tried to kill her. Using the healing skills he had been taught as well as some rare ingredients he was finally able to combat the poison enough that the woman was able to maintain consciousness. For the next several months he was by her side day and night, trying to cure her and keep her company, the first he company he had outside of family, ever. They grew close, and as she slowly started to stronger they were really able to know each other, eventually falling in love.
She eventually confessed that she is a Deva, sent to help fight an unusual evil, but along her path someone had dealt her a blow she couldn't heal from. With this revelation Ben was able to use more ingredients that a mortal would not have been able to survive and eventually found an antidote for the poison. As it neutralized in her system, they spent the following weeks helping her recover, and as she grew stronger, their feelings grew even deeper. She revealed that eventually she would have to leave and return the the celestial domain, but they entered a pact: she would guide him and send him powers so that he might travel the world doing good. Should he prove his worth as a mortal instrument of the heavenly realms, he would one day be able to transform into a Deva himself, joining her in Celestia.
The shrine having been so long abandoned by the populace, she confirmed, had removed it's divinity and was no longer a holy place. With his book of some of her spells, and the songs and poetry they wrote each other, Ben traveled with her for a while before she eventually left the Prime Material Plane. He journeys now to follow the good path that will one day allow their love to reunite.
Ben is a gentle soul, though no push over. Living in such a harsh climate made him vigilant to danger, but also how to appreciate small comforts and beauty. He is calm, quiet, and still: loud and sudden noises or movements often provoked trouble in the wilderness. He does not kill or harm when there is no desperate need to, he tries to be kind and generous whenever possible, and is very charitable. He eats little and doesn't partake in alcohol or other vices...mostly not really understanding them. He is not particularly holy or reverent, more just trying to do good because it's the right thing to do. Power is a means to an end, not really something he covets. Ben does tend to keep secrets, as he has rarely had anyone to trust enough to tell them to: he is especially guarded of his patron and their relationship, fearing that someone may be out to get her.
He uses a wand made from a unicorn horn. It had been a relic at the shrine for many generations, having been gifted by a unicorn that was a mount for a Champion of the Sun God who made a pilgrimage through the area long ago. The Deva helped Ben properly craft the horn into the wand, and gave it a minor blessing that it would never break as long as they loved one another.
Mechanics: - Human (Variant) - Variant feat: prodigy. - Skills at 1st Level: Survival (human; expertise from Prodigy), Medicine (hermit), Religion (hermit), Performance (prodigy skill), Arcana (Warlock), Nature (Warlock). - Languages at 1st Level: Common, Elvish (human), Draconic (Prodigy), Celestial (Hermit). -Lawful Good (maybe Neutral Good, up for discussion). - Pact Boon: Pact of the Tome. Ben's Book of Shadows is an otherwise ordinary book, it having been a journal during the time he cared for her, but it contains a lock of her hair, a flower crown he made for her, love letters they had written, and other such mementos pressed between pages. When he journals at night, she'll occasionally have responses for him by morning, sometimes even writing as he writes. Most of the "spells" in the book are just love poems in Celestial. -Ultimate goal: upon reaching 17th level he will learn the spell True Polymorph, letting him permanently turn himself into a Deva.
other notes: The poison turned out to be a concoction of Vrock Spores and Slaadi blood. The Deva's angelic nature being the only thing to prevent immediate death and corruption. Ben has discovered, however, this concoction would be enough to kill angelic beings if the dose was high enough and medical treatment wasn't available.

2022.01.24 00:54 dappernaut77 Dude, fuck everything. I saw some spooky shit on r/cursedimages and now I don't want to leave the bathroom.
What can I say dude? I've been in here for like 20 minutes now and I still sweat everytime I touch the doorknob.
Ik, ik. "Bro, your 18 grow a pair and open the door" is probably what your saying but cut me some slack dude. Its because of some petty childhood fear I held onto into adulthood and I just cant help in that department.

2022.01.24 00:53 dlb8685 Just Found This Group (Dan Bryan)
I am the real Dan Bryan. You can tell from the initials of my username.
Pretty amazed and surprised to find this page. For what it's worth, keep it up with the mods. I couldn't figure out how to play any of them, maybe pin a post somewhere that ELI5 what to do on the mod site?
Fun fact, it's been about 9 years and 51 weeks since I started the site. It was still the tail end of when people were pitching the, "you can start a website, get a lot of ad clicks, and make good money" line. It was 100% supposed to be a side hustle. I didn't understand the importance of "picking a side" if you want to have any kind of success with popular history. I decided to strike a very neutral, detached, down-the-middle editorial tone, which I think was a mistake. Also, maybe my writing is only slightly above-average and not great enough to drive huge engagement.
The point is, after about 6 months of this, I thought, "Why not create something interactive that can drive traffic to the site and help teach people about history in the process?" When I was a kid my dad bought this board game called The Campaign Trail in a thrift store. It was very basic and you basically roll dice and move around the board to "campaign" in different states, and if you rolled doubles you could pick an endorsement card that would give you help in random states. There was no rhyme or reason, one roll you could get endorsed by the NRA, the next roll you could get the NEA card. But there was more of an element of chicken involved too -- were you going to commit all your time to California (which made it harder to roll back to the east coast), or did the other player signal they were going to win California at all costs?
I thought, "with a computer you could make a much better version of this, and I don't see a really great alternative."
I think I over-complicated the back-end a bit. My biggest gripes about adding scenarios is it takes a ton of work per question/answer, it's very easily to miscalibrate b/c the math and interactions are complex, and there's no way to change the total vote count to reflect turnout. I've been working on 2020 for months. Now that I'm married, considering an M.A., have a much more involved job, etc. etc. etc. it's so much harder to carve out the time. 2020 will probably be the last scenario that I personally add for the foreseeable future. I can't say 100% that I *won't* work on a 2024 scenario after that election is over, but there's a good chance I won't.
I will try to dive into the site performance a little bit. I can't make any promises, but hopefully there is some low-hanging fruit that won't take long to fix. There are some long-running queries related to the Hall of Fame and the historical game-by-game results.
